Uttar Pradesh (UP), home to approximately 16.5% of India's population, stands at the heart of the nation with a significant cultural and economic footprint. Contributing around 8% to India’s GDP, the state is on an ambitious journey to elevate its GDP to $1 trillion, targeting a growth trajectory that reflects its immense potential. Under the leadership of Hon'ble Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath—Uttar Pradesh is transforming into Ujjwal Pradesh, a vision that drives aspirations for a brighter, more prosperous future. Economic Reforms The economic landscape of Uttar Pradesh has been notably reshaped by the Double Engine government’s strategic initiatives. With a current Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of approximately 25.48 lakh crore (FY 2023-24), the state is focused on becoming India's largest economy. Investment in infrastructure is paramount, with a substantial focus on developing roads, railways, and airports. The recent UP Ground-Breaking Ceremony 4.0 exemplifies this vision-attracting both domestic and international investments, and thereby bolstering industrial progress. In addition, Hon’ble Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's government is playing a vital role in social welfare through various schemes. The scholarship program has benefitted pre-matric and post-matric students, while the Mukhyamantri Samuh Vivaah Yojana supports the marriages of daughters from economically weaker families, as well as the remarriage of widows and divorced women. The Old Age Pension Scheme ensures that only senior citizens from economically disadvantaged backgrounds can access its benefits, with pension amounts directly transferred to beneficiaries' bank accounts. These initiatives not only enhance social welfare but also foster economic growth, contributing to the vision of Ujjwal Pradesh. Agricultural Development Uttar Pradesh boasts over 1.87 crore hectares of land suitable for farming, making it unique in India, as 76% of its total land area is dedicated to agriculture. This sector remains a cornerstone of the state's economy, underpinned by fertile soil and a strong agricultural base. The Double Engine government has announced plans for an export hub near the upcoming Jewar International Airport to boost agricultural exports. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasised the importance of increasing credit flow to farmers and encouraging greater participation from women’s groups in farming and food processing. Under the UP-AGREES initiative, the state will focus on developing centres of excellence for specific products, strengthening supply chains, and improving crop quality to meet market standards. A six-year project valued at approximately Rs 4,000 crore, in collaboration with the World Bank, aims to directly benefit farmers and enhance their livelihoods. Notably, 500 farmers will have the opportunity to learn advanced agricultural techniques abroad, further boosting per capita income and improving the credit-deposit ratio in targeted districts. Infrastructure Development Since Hon’ble Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came to power, Uttar Pradesh's infrastructure has undergone substantial transformations. In 2017, only two airports—Varanasi and Lucknow—were fully operational. Today, the state boasts ten operational airports, facilitating 150 flights to over 75 destinations. The government has also prioritised the construction of major expressways, including the Purvanchal Expressway, with plans for the Bundelkhand Expressway, Gorakhpur Link Expressway, Ballia Link Expressway, and Chitrakoot Link Expressway soon to follow. The state aims to expand its network further, with a target of 21 airports in the near future. In addition to transportation improvements, Uttar Pradesh is making significant strides in power generation. By the end of 2024, the state’s power generation capacity is expected to reach 12,800 MW. In 2017, electricity supply had reached 128,494 villages; last year, this number surged to 249,818, indicating that 100% of hamlets have been electrified. Furthermore, the state is advancing solar energy projects and enhancing tourism, all contributing to a more robust infrastructure framework. Ujjwal Future Ahead! As Uttar Pradesh forges ahead on its path to becoming Ujjwal Pradesh, the concerted efforts of the government, businesses, and communities are crucial in realising this vision. The initiatives undertaken in economic reforms, agricultural development, and infrastructure enhancement not only aim to elevate the state's GDP but also to create an inclusive and sustainable environment for all its residents. By prioritising social welfare and empowering marginalised communities—UP is not just focusing on economic growth but also on fostering a sense of belonging and opportunity for everyone. The dedication and commitment of Hon’ble Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to modernise infrastructure and promote innovation have positioned Uttar Pradesh as a burgeoning hub of development in India. With the ambitious goal of achieving a $1 trillion economy, the state is going to become a significant player on the national and global stage. As these transformative measures take root, Uttar Pradesh stands ready to embrace a brighter, more prosperous future, benefitting generations to come.
