Empowered Women at the Heart of Uttar Pradesh’s Development Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state of Uttar Pradesh has been undergoing a transformation focused on women at the heart of its development. The fifth phase of the state's Mission Shakti program is much more than a mere governmental initiative but reflects a long-term vision and the concentration on women's empowerment, security, and self-reliance. It is, therefore, a project perfectly in line with the larger objectives of social and economic development that places women not as recipients but as agents of change and progress. Such enabling orders are reflected in Mission Shakti. Direct employment of government jobs for 1.5 lakh women and free LPG gas connections to 1.83 crore women under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana have freed such women from the drudgery of cooking with traditional fuels. In the same way, 60 lakh mothers have benefitted under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana catering for them in their critical times in life. The sanitation status of the state has also been improved visibly. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, toilets have been constructed in as many as 2.75 crore along with pink toilets in 4,500 urban locations, giving not just hygiene but dignity to women. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao has seen the empowerment of 1.9 crore girls, and under the PM Awas Yojana, 56 lakh houses have been built, which has a direct impact on women's lives by giving them a safe environment at home. Most significant efforts have been in the direction of women's entrepreneurship through direct financial assistance. Loans worth ₹2,353 crore have been disbursed to 2.35 lakh members of SHGs, who are being channelled into more productive economic activities. The leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also ensured that women be given rights of ownership. Under the PM Svamitva Yojana, 66 lakh Gharuanis have so far been distributed among women. It means giving ownership rights to them. Their social status and security are thus enhanced. The setting up of Pink Booths in each police station and the office of the State Commission for Women is a step to save and secure women. During the period of January 1 to June 30, 2024, the state has reported 8,762 cases of crimes against women, while in Mission Shakti, 10,378 accused have been caught. Such swift and strict action has placed Uttar Pradesh at the top rank in the country regarding the conviction rates of crimes against women. Education, too, forms the basis of the initiatives of Mission Shakti. Programs to enhance the self-esteem of girls are being organised in schools, whereas seminars and webinars have been conducted to raise awareness over issues like menstrual hygiene and women's rights. Special attention to such topics depicts the interest of the state in not only financial empowerment but also mental and physical well-being. One of the most promising initiatives of the program is the deployment of over 58,000 Banking Correspondents (BC Sakhi), which has opened up the face of banking to women in rural areas. Financial literacy and independence are, of course, critical steps that would empower women with the tools to thrive in today's economy. While advancing with Mission Shakti Phase 5, the multi-pronged campaign continues its innings. Special operations like Operation Garuda, Operation Shield, and Operation Destroy focus on safety and security. The state continues to take strong action not just against all forms of societal ills but also against other practices such as child labour—be it conducting seminars to ensure proper menstrual hygiene or launching operations against child labour. It is the prerogative of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to say that empowering women is not only a policy initiative but also a moral imperative. His words have struck a chord: 'Our mothers, daughters, and sisters are contributing to creating a new Bharat.' This visionary approach has not only changed the lives of countless women across Uttar Pradesh but also set a powerful precedent for other states to follow. The success of Mission Shakti points towards how the government of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is weaving women's welfare into the goals of development of the state. Empowerment of women is no longer merely an issue of social equity; it stands at the centre of Uttar Pradesh's economic and social development. The numbers are there for all to see, but what is truly remarkable is the scale and ambition behind the mission. It is an initiative wherein the effort goes to show how united a state is in forging a future where women do not take part but lead the way to change.
